Where Gonzales-Torres stands

Immigration & border

My father was deported when I was a child, and as a result of that experience, I studied family separation systems as an anthropologist at UCLA. The measure of successful immigration policy is simple: families stay together.

Health care

My goal is Medicare for All, a single-payer program. Until we win that, here is what I would fund, change and cut.

Energy & environment

For historical, economic, and local reasons, I vehemently oppose this move and would instead work to make current protections permanent so that no future administrations can turn our communities into sacrifice zones. In 1969, the Santa Barbara oil spill led to the modern environmental movement in this state. In 2015, we saw another oil spill in Refugio and again in 2021 at Huntington Beach.

Crime & public safety

CA-34 is home to one of the largest immigrant populations in the nation. In a district where federal agents have been seizing our neighbors off the street, a network that tracks every car and answers to no one is a threat to this community. Flock cameras have built a mass surveillance network allowing warrantless tracking of citizens, and have been abused by police officers for personal stalking of women.

Housing

The Faircloth Amendment needs to be repealed. I would pair repeal with direct construction funding, permanent affordability requirements, and an acquisition fund so existing affordable buildings can leave the speculative market through community land trusts.

Foreign policy

Specifically for the current situation in Israel-Palestine, I support the Block the Bombs Act because I recognize the necessity to prevent Israel from committing further atrocities against Palestinian children and families.

Elections, ethics & government

Content that depicts a real candidate saying or doing something they did not say or do, presented as authentic, should be prohibited outright. That is fraud, whether the tool was a rendering engine or a film crew. Everything else should carry a clear, persistent, machine-readable disclosure on the ad itself, not buried in a filing.

Technology & AI

I support a moratorium on new AI data centers until we have enforceable federal standards, and I do not think that makes me anti-innovation. It makes me opposed to building an industry on costs somebody else pays.
